Frankfurt, Germany

***DISCLAIMER: please ignore/disregard all typos and bad grammar in my entire blog! I was rently reading through my old posts and was horrified by some of my typos. I promise i am a competent writer, but i am usually writing these either late at night and trying to get them finished, or while onnthe airplane flying back from a trip. Don't judge me for it ;-) ***

Our next stop (and michaels last stop) was Frankfurt, Germany. . Michael had to catch a military flight home from ramstein on thursday, and frankfurt was the closest major city. The reaction we got from most people when we said we were going to frankfurt was "oh..... Really?" so we didnt have very high expectations.

I was actually pretty pleasantly surprised by Frankfurt.  our hotel was located across the street from the trainstation and therefore in the red light district. Despite the fact that i saw multiple drug deals (literally saaw cash exchanged for pills 3 times) i thought frankfurt was a really nice city! Once you got away from the red light district the streets were very clean and there were tons of cool old building and huge skyscrapers.

We got in at 2 am so we went straight to bed - we got a really cheap double room (a double bed and twin bed... I obviously got the big bed:) the next morning we had the hostel breakfast which was a HUGE improvement from galway. They had rolls, salami, cheese, toast, jam, nutella, tomatos, cucumbers, and hardboiled eggs. It was nice to have a little variety, especiallt when i realized i was running out of money! My new strategy was to eat breakfast as late as possible and eat as much  as possible so i would only have to buy one meal a day. It worked out pretty well for me!

After breakfast we went out to explore a little bit. There was a HUGE food market in front of our hostel which was awesome. Tons of stands selling all kinds of cooked food. We had out first german bratwurst for lunch. Its pretty amazing to me that the country that is famous for frankfurters and bratwurst has yet to perfect the hot-dog bun. I ordered and bratwurst and they put it on a hamburger-sized roll (which seemed to be the trend every where in the city.) it was madness!

We had no idea where to go in the city so we bought tickets for the citysightseeing bus. CitySighteeeing is a chain company in almost every european city. Its overpriced and i usually grumble about it in alicante but it ended up being a big help since we literally knew nothing about frankfurt. Since we bought the tickets after 3 they would also be valid the next day, which was a big help. On the bus they give you headsets so you can have the english tour guide recording. It was cool to see the contrast between the old building sthat survived ww2 and the new, flashier skyscrapers.

That night we went out to get some authentic german food for dinner, i got frankfurters and potato salad and michael got bratwurst and sauerkraut (or sour cabbage, on the english menu) it was sooooo good and definitely the best potato salad id ever had! (sorry dad)

The next day we used our city bus passes to get around the city. Here are some pictures from around Frankfurt that day!

Im glad frankfurt ended up being pretty nice! I got a little taste of germany but will definitely be coming back some day to see more!
